Virginia Beach (USA) – August 30, 2009. at Philippine Cultural Center, Dong Hung Buddhist Temple hosted the Ullambana event this year. This event was presented and led by the most Venerable Thich Thông Kinh (abbot of Dong Hung Temple) and the monks and nuns who live and exercise at the Temple. Over 500 Buddhists as well as others attended this ceremony. See more pictures

The agenda included lion dances, martial arts demonstrations, chanting, praying for longevity and pinning roses on one’s pockets. There was a lot of food prepared by Dong Hung Buddhist followers. The food created a warm atmosphere for all who attended the event.

Of course, there was the beautiful entertainment with the theme “A rose for your pocket”. Linh Tâm, Xuân Đào, Nguyễn Long, Thanh Tú, Quốc Huyền, Đan Thanh, Vi Nguyễn and other singers who entertained the audiences on that meaningful evening.

During Ullambana, students from the Lạc Việt Vietnamese  School were in charge of pinning roses on all who attended. The rose was a reminder of the everlasting happiness we have when our parents are still alive or the immense sorrow when our parents have passed away.

Some of the senior attendees took part in the Praying for Longevity Ceremony. They were so happy when they received gifts from the host and their children.  Dong Hung temple offered each of them a calligraphy plate that was made by Ven. Chúc Hội.  The most Venerable of Dong Hung temple also offered a prayer to them and the audience by reading a poem “That year, although I was still very young my mother left me, and I realized  that I was an orphan, …” The poem was performed by the Master monk and moved the audience and made them fondly remember their parents.

Everyone had a joyous time at the ceremony. We hope that every year the host will hold a similar event that helps the younger generation learn ways to repay their parents.
