(Colombo) President  Mahinda Rajapaksa on Sunday (May 24, 2009) paid homage to the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura and offered gold ornaments.

The President also planted a Bo sapling at the ‘Pahala Maluwa’, a Cultural Ministry official confirmed.

The Sacred Jaya Siri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura is reckoned as the oldest surviving historical tree in the world. It was brought to Sri Lanka by the Theri Sangamitta, daughter of Emperor Asoka and was planted in the Mahameghavana Park in Anuradhapura in 249 BC by King Devanampiyatissa. It is said to be the southern branch of the Jaya Siri Maha Bodhi at Buddha Gaya in India under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment.

It has been an age old tradition of kings who ruled the country to pay homage to the Sri Maha Bodhi, after winning a battle.

The Chief Incumbent of the temple, Atamasthanadhipathi Ven. Pallegama Sirinivasa Thera said it was the first time a head of State of the country had the privilege of offering gold ornaments to the sacred Bo tree.

The President also paid homage to the Ruwanweli Seya and paid obeisance at the statue of King Dutugemunu, who was the last king to unify the entire country.

The prelates invoked blessings on the President for his great achievement in defeating terrorism to free the nation.
