General Discussion with Chuc Thanh

May 17, 2010

There was a very low turnout for the class on Monday, May 17, 2010.  We think the inclement weather and the temporary change in class location may have contributed to the attendance.  Please email Chuc Thanh with any feedback you have for the class so far.

We did have a general discussion with Chuc Thanh on a wide ranging number of topics regarding Buddhism and the Buddha.

Please be sure to attend the Buddha’s birthday celebration on Sunday, May 22, 2010 at 5 PM.  Please check the website for details.

Part 3, the Duties of Children

May 10, 2010 Parents and Children General Relationships

The 5 basic duties of parents to their children:

1)  Parents must restrain their children from evil.

Parents must stop their children from doing bad things (saying, doing or thinking bad things).  Our spirit and action make karma.  Parents must observe each child as an individual and must care about and for their children.  Children can be influenced when they are young.  Parents must guide them when they are young and establish the family traditions.

Buddhist traditions state that Buddha liked to have discussions after the lunch meal to pass on daily thoughts and teachings.  Families are encouraged to do the same—eat together and enter into discussions lead by the parents to share information together and establish family traditions.

Part 2, the Duties of Children

May 3, 2010 Parents and Children General Relationships

The 5 basic duties of children to their parents:

1)  Having supported me, I shall support them.

The class opened with a question:  “What should children do for their parents?”  Class discussion ranged from “Don’t stress them out” do “it really depends on the culture.”  In some cultures, children must always do what their parents say, without question.

Part 1, Parents and Children

April 26, 2010 Parents and Children General Relationships

Buddha teaches that the parent is Buddha if there is no Buddha in the family life.  Children have to practice to learn their parents brought them to life and taught them.  The day the children do all they can do is a happy day for Buddha.  Buddha day is combined with Father and Mother’s day.  The relationship between Mother and Children is the closest.  Father keeps his love more internally.
