Philanthropy in Action
For the 4th year, Dong Hung Temple - Buddhist Education Center of American opened its pristine grounds and welcoming doors to the entire Tidewater community for The Great Compassion Festival on July 16 and 17, 2016.
In this time of turmoil, where frustration and division are so prevalent in everyday life, compassion is a valuable commodity. This year’s event, titled The Spring of Love, was a joyous celebration that offered the warmth of spirit that can sometimes seem to be missing from humanity. The Venerable Monks of the temple opened up their home for people of every race, religion, and creed to come together in the spirit of kindness for two days of entertainment, cultural events, and family fun. During the festivities, monastery communities from North Carolina and Ohio joined with the monks of Virginia Beach to share special ceremonies and services for compassion.
During the two-day festival, the Sangha of the temple showed the loving heart of their community. The dedicated monks and volunteers gave their time, gifts, and skills to care for visitors experiencing the festival. Each year the temple community cooks traditional Vietnamese food to make sure the crowds are blessed with refreshments. While participants, dance, sing, and enjoy entertainment, the temple members and monks hustle behind the scenes demonstrating true compassion – service, warmth, and charity.
Thank you to the Venerable Monks, talented performers, all of the volunteers, and the participants that made this year’s event a success.
Dong Hung Temple - Buddhist Education Center of America is looking forward to sharing the spirit of compassion during next year’s festival in 2017. If you’re interested in volunteering or being a part of the 5th Great Compassion Festival on October 29, 2017.
