Dharma Discussion Topic: Wisdom

The Dharma Discussion Group completed its series of topics based on the Six Paramitas during the months of August through October, 2015.  The final topic was “Wisdom.”

Typically, the evening discussions would include the stated topic and related concepts.  Therefore, the following key points collected from the discussions are not all specific to “Wisdom” alone.

Notes on Patience

These notes are compiled from four discussion sessions on the topic of Patience.

There are four modes of practice:  Impatient, Patient, Taming, And Calming.

For example, impatient is when one scolds another who is scolding him.

Patient is when one does not scold another who is scolding him.  When we return negative things in kind, that is a form of impatience.

Patience includes the virtues of forbearance, forgiveness and tolerance.  The group talked quite a bit about the difference or similarities between tolerance and acceptance.  Tolerance appears to contain somewhat negative connotation.  Acceptance could also contain a negative connotation but dictionary definitions indicate this is not the case.

Patience is the foundation of metta (metta meditation).

Tuesday Dharma Discussion Group Update

Note: The group is no longer meeting at Pretlow Library sine May 2016.

The Dharma Discussion Group has been meeting regularly through 2014 on Tuesday nights. The first Tuesday of each month, the group meets at the Mary D. Pretlow Library in the Ocean View area of Norfolk at 7:00 PM. The group meets in the Temple’s Buddha Hall the other Tuesday evenings each month at 7:30 PM.

Everyone is invited to attend any Tuesday evening they can.  Unlike taking a class, the group is informally structured so that each evening’s discussion is unique.  Participants in the discussion read sutras related to each topic to prepare for the discussion.  They research the topic on their own and also receive suggested reading from one of the Venerable Teachers.
