Topic:        Bodhisattvas,

The Venerable Thay Thanh led the discussion.

We opened the discussion with reference to the Lotus Sutra Chapter 25. It took several centuries after the death of the Buddha to compile the content of this sutra.  It is the combination of many of the Buddha’s teachings.  It is one of the most important sutras in the Mahayana Tradition.

The basis of idea of Buddha’s appearing in this life is only because of the causes and conditions of the one great matter. “What is mean by All Buddhas, World Honored Ones, appear in the world only because of the causes and conditions of the one great matter?’ 1. The Buddhas, the World Honored Ones, appear in the world because they wish to lead living beings to open the knowledge and vision of the Buddhas and gain purity. 2. They appear in the world because they wish to demonstrate to all living beings the knowledge and vision of the Buddhas. 3. They appear in the world because they wish to lead living beings to awaken to the knowledge and vision of the Buddhas. 4. They appear in the world because they wish to lead living beings to enter into the Path of the knowledge and vision of the Buddhas.”

We talked at length about these steps and how they apply to our daily lives.

The Mahayana Tradition brought the study and practice of Buddhism to the people.  Early on the Theravada Tradition focused on the isolation of the practitioner from the general population.  The concept of multiple and many Bodhisattvas is a key component of the Mahayana Tradition.
