Dong Hung Buddhist Temple
Tuesday Evening Discussion Group
May 13, 2014
The Venerable Thich Chuc Thanh presided at the discussion group.
We opened the session with a directed meditation by Thay Thanh with the focus of letting go. In order to develop compassion, we should practice six ways of escape in the Nissaraniya sutra: means of escape
Good Will (or Loving Kindness) to escape from ill-will
Compassion to escape from viciousness
Appreciation (or Altruistic Joy) to escape from resentment
Equanimity to escape from passion/lust
Signless/ markless Liberation of the mind to escape from the drift of signs
“I am” is gone. I do not regard anything as “This I Am”.
Thay Thanh suggested that we should substitute or replace the idea of being “born” with “manifestation.”
The discussion focused on the removal of distractions through the sutra teaching in the Vitakkasanthana Sutta: The Removal of Distracting Thoughts.
Reflect on different objects connected to skilled or unskilled thoughts.
Reflect on feeling horrible, humiliated or disgusted.
Reflect on disadvantages and/or negative consequences.
Reflect on the removal of the sources of unskilled thoughts.
With clenched teeth and the tongue pressing on the pallet, restrain, subdue and beat down the evil mind by the good mind.
