Prologue - A Brief History about Us
Dong Hung temple in Virginia Beach, VA is officially known as the Buddhist Education Center of America, Inc. It is named after another Pagoda in the district 2 of Sai Gon City, in South Vietnam – namely To Dinh Dong Hung, which literally translated to the Ancestral Temple Dong Hung. The temple’s name was chosen to commemorate the Founding Fathers – the Venerable Bhikkhu Thich Buu Chi who built, and the Venerable Bhikkhu Thich Hanh Tru who succeeded his Master in the maintaining and renovating processes throughout its history.
Historically Dong Hung Temple was started with its first location in the Kempsville area of Virginia Beach, in 1998, by the Venerable Buddhist monks and a number of altruistic Buddhist members. The original temple was rather modest to accommodate an ever-increasing congregation, so that in 2006, with the Buddha’s blessings, the temple was relocated to its present establishment at 4177 West Neck Rd, Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Just like our incorporated name implicates, Dong Hung Temple is a Buddhist educational service center with these main Purposes and Principles:
In religion - to teach Buddhist doctrines to introduce and improve knowledge of Buddhism - A place of worship for the practitioners
In service - to lead daily prayer services as well as special services for weddings, funerals, memorials, etc… and to organize retreats to promote better quality of life, peace and happiness
In meditation – to provide basic guidance and instructive methodology to the seekers of inner peace and harmony
In Vietnamese language – to teach the Vietnamese language to keep our culture and traditions
Outreach programs – to help out the less fortunate locally as well as in Viet Nam (see further information regarding Charity in a separate section)
